The I-80 Project

The I-80 Ridge to Route 30 Project began in 2010 with a plan to take a detailed look at the current and future transportation needs for the improvement of Interstate 80 from Ridge Road to US 30. Interstate 80 is an important link in the nation’s interstate system, and is the second longest interstate highway in the U.S., connecting downtown San Francisco, California to Teaneck, New Jersey, and the first to be completed coast to coast. Much of I-80 across northern Illinois was constructed in the early 1960’s, with the route through south suburban Chicagoland opened to traffic by 1964.

The Purpose of the I-80 Phase I Study is to provide an improved transportation system along I-80 from Ridge Road to U.S. Route 30, proposing corridor-wide improvements, mainline bridge improvements, Des Plaines River Bridge improvements, major interchange improvements at I-55, Center Street, and Chicago street, and minor interchange modifications at Larkin Avenue, Richards Street, and Briggs Street.

Project Overview

The I-80 study area begins at Ridge Road to the west and ends at U.S. Route 30 to the east, approximately 16 miles. The corridor encompasses three counties (Kendall, Grundy and Will), and passes through six municipalities (Minooka, Channahon, Shorewood, Rockdale, Joliet and New Lenox), and consists of a diverse mixture of land uses including agricultural, residential, commercial and industrial with rural, suburban and urban characteristics. The roadway crosses four waterways (DuPage River, Rock Run Creek, Des Plaines River, and Hickory Creek), includes eight interchanges, and handles heavy truck traffic.
